Because the effort-to-reward ratio of a high-performance shortboard doesn’t fit everyone’s equation, hybrid boards add a little more forgiveness without giving up too much in shredability. By combining user-friendly features like more thickness, a fuller outline, and flatter rocker with performance-oriented bottom contours, hybrids paddle easier, provide drive and glide more readily, and are still able to carve turns, smash the lip, and find tubes. Hybrids come in all fin configurations, but are most often thrusters or five-fin (intended to allow thruster or quad set-ups). Hybrids are usually designed to excel in small to medium-size waves.
